This traditional one storey semi detached house went through a full refurbishment as well as having a modern addition extending at the rear. We found it very important to include natural materials in a home like this. When you are designing wall to wall, boundary to boundary, a wall cannot just be a wall. It has to provide visual relief and add a quality to the space that works to heighten the beauty of the garden spaces, not create conflict with them. When Matt and Rochelle, owners of @secretgardensau

When Matt and Rochelle, owners of @secretgardensau, approached us to help bring their vision for Courtland House to life, we knew allowing the house to communicate with the outside by bringing in the gardens was key. The challenge: how do you do this when you are hemmed in by eight surrounding properties, all with site lines inward? Creating a series of internal and external gardens helped delineate the different zones of the house and give each family member an oasis. And by using a variety of view control measures, we ensured you could look out onto open green, even from the most private of spaces, yet feel safe and secluded.
