STONEMASON'S HOUSE |VAUCLUSE |2023

A contemporary extension that harmoniously blends with a historic stonemason's house in Vaucluse, enhancing views of Watsons Bay while preserving the original sandstone detailing.

The proposal for this historic property in Vaucluse seeks to blend the original, well-maintained sandstone house with a new extension that maximises the upper floors’ views over Watsons Bay. The property once served as the stonemason's residence, and the remains of his craft are visible throughout.

Original detailing on the lower floors is preserved to maintain the character of the property. The reconstruction of the first floor and creation of an open-plan, modern yet subtle addition draws a gentle division between old and new.

The chamfered copper roof and black battens contrast with, but do not compete against, the existing sandstone. The lightweight appearance of the first floor allows the extension to sit gently on its sandstone plinth. Internally, the first floor frames views of Watsons Bay, significantly improving the quality of the living spaces and creating an unforgettable outlook.
