This project celebrates the site’s dramatic coastal setting while unlocking contemporary living within a challenging topography. We secured a sensitive design solution that retains the original cottage structure and its familiar coastal frontage, then quietly integrates a modern home positioned to capture panoramic ocean views.

From the entry level, the house presents a nod to the neighbourhood's traditional character—scale and material feel are intact. Beyond the threshold, the plan widens and light takes over. A new rear addition is sculpted into the sloping site, featuring a living green roof that aligns with the pattern of the natural landscape, bringing generous openings, improved planning, and robust outdoor connections via concrete terraces. The design blurs the lines between the built structure and the natural environment. The green roof effectively becomes a functional part of the surrounding landscape, enhancing biodiversity and minimising visual impact. Living spaces are oriented to the outlook, with extensive glazing and planting framing the harbour beyond.

The design balances conservation and renewal seamlessly. The front cottage rooms receive subtle upgrades to comfort and services without losing their charm; the new work is legible, timeless, and built to last. The home now lives as two complementary experiences: a traditional cottage greeting the arrival point; a calm, contemporary retreat unfolding behind and beneath it.
