A contemporary refurbishment of a traditional semi-detached house featuring a striking rear extension, blending modern design with original detailing for a harmonious living space.

This traditional single-storey semi-detached house underwent a full refurbishment alongside a modern rear extension. The existing rooflines were used to dictate the form of the extension, while the black brick finish responds to the home's heritage detailing.

The rear extension contrasts with the traditional property through polished concrete floors, full-height windows, and a mid-century modern kitchen as its centrepiece. Curved edges soften the kitchen's appearance and bridge the modern and traditional themes of the home.

The original house retains much of its character — high skirtings, cornices, and pressed metal ceilings. The black brick continues inside as a feature wall, complementing the black elements of the kitchen. The curves extend beyond the kitchen, appearing in the bathroom window and its floorplan. The laundry is concealed within joinery, giving more space to this narrow property.

The rear extension opens onto the garden, allowing the living spaces to breathe and inviting a welcome breeze. A dog door lets the two resident pooches roam freely between inside and out.
